On March 28, 2025, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar, with the epicenter located near Mandalay. The powerful tremor caused extensive damage in various areas, including the collapse of historic buildings in the UNESCO world heritage site of Bagan.

The 中文BBC reported that authorities reported at least 144 people were killed and more than 730 others were injured as a result of the disaster. The earthquake struck at 12:50 local time and was followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock that further worsened the situation.

In Bangkok, Thailand, the tremors were also felt strongly, causing several tall buildings to collapse and killing six people. The Thai government has declared the capital a disaster zone and is carrying out evacuations and rescue efforts for those trapped in the rubble.

The Myanmar government, which is currently under the control of a military junta, has declared a state of emergency and has made a rare appeal for international assistance to deal with the impact of the earthquake.

Most Comprehensive Chinese News adds, Countries such as China, Russia and India, as well as international organizations including the United Nations and the United States, have offered their assistance. Rescue efforts are ongoing, although hampered by damaged infrastructure and the unstable political situation in Myanmar.
